Warm Weather Workout Tips

Warm weather is on its way, can you feel it? We love the warm weather and everything that comes with it, but working out in warm weather can pose some challenges. Before the heat is in full swing we want to give you guys some tips for working out in warm weather because we want all of you guys to stay safe out there. Without further ado, here’s some tips to beat the heat!

Tip #1: Stay hydrated!

This should be a given by now. It must even seem a little overdone, but it really is one of the most important ways to stay safe and prevent heat exhaustion and- in serious cases- heat stroke. We want to make sure we aren’t losing too many fluids while we set, which tends to happen a lot in warmer weather. The preferred drink would be water, but it is also suggested by Penn Medicine that if you are working out for over 60 minutes to bring a sports drink high in electrolytes to keep you energized and motivated to continue your workout. Slight warning, though, drink water when your body needs it. Don’t drink too much water or you could experience over-hydrating. Listen to your body!

Tip #2: Wear your sunscreen!

Sunscreen is so important for your health! When working out it’s important that you wear at least 50 SPF and waterproof sunscreen. The water proof will help the sunscreen stay on despite how sweaty you may get during your workout.

Tip #3: Wear the right clothes!

Dark colors attract the sunlight, so avoid dark shades and focus on lighter colors that won’t attract that heat! Loose fitted clothing is also suggested as it allows air circulation to reach your skin and cool you off! Tight-fitting clothing won’t allow that!

TIp #4: Know when to go out!

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. are known to be the hottest parts of the day. If possible, go out during the cooler parts of the day, whether that’s morning or afternoon (whichever works best with your schedule). This will help you avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke!

Tip #5: Know the warning signs!

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are no joke, and knowing the warning signs can prevent a trip to the hospital. Although heat exhaustion is not as serious as heat stroke it is still important to understand the symptoms and how to reverse them. When it comes to heat exhaustion symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, loss of appetite/ feeling sick, muscle cramps, and intense dehydration. If you experience any of these symptoms it’s best that you move to a cool place, lie down with feet raised slightly (if possible), drink water or a sports drink, and try to cool skin- specifically the neck and armpits as they will help regulate body temperature.

Heat stroke is a lot more serious and if you are experiencing any of these symptoms after removing yourself from the heat you should immediately call 911. Symptoms can include still feeling unwell after 30 minutes, not sweating even if you’re still hot, fast breathing/ shortness of breath, loss of consciousness and/ or being non-responsive!

That’s all of our tips for today! We want everyone out there to stay safe out there! Thanks for reading today, and hopefully you learned something helpful!
