10 Healthy Eating Tips

We found 10 eating tips that will encourage a healthy lifestyle and/or help with getting the nutrients and other benefits that your body deserves:

1. Let’s get that grain!

Grains like oatmeal, bread, pasta, and low-sugar cereals grant your body the energy needed to get through the day. Grains also reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity, and even some forms of cancer, so make sure to include them in your diet.

 2. Pack in that protein!

Protein is very important. It lowers blood pressure, helps maintain weight loss, rebuilds muscles, and also can reduce the craving for late-night snacking. Some good examples of healthy proteins are low-fat cuts of beef or pork, skinless chicken and turkey, seafood, and eggs. If you want more plant-based proteins you can try varieties of beans, peas, nuts, and seeds.

3. Keep your plate colorful!

When eating make sure you have a variety of different colored fruits and vegetables. Different colors often mean different nutrients, and it’s important to have diversity when it comes to your nutrients rather than having the same nutrients in every meal.

    4. Make eating goals with friends and/or family!

It can be difficult to stay on track when trying to eat healthily, but when you create goals with those around you it suddenly becomes much easier. It’s a good idea to have people around you that can support you and your goals, as well as keep you on track.

      5. Try healthier cooking methods!

Grilling and frying food can often add compounds to your food that are detrimental to your overall health. Not only this, but these methods are also known to take away nutrients naturally found in the food during the process of cooking. If you want to get all your nutrients and avoid these harmful compounds then it’s best to bake, roast, poach, or broil your meals.

        6. Never go grocery shopping without a list!

When grocery shopping it can be very easy to be tempted by all the fatty, artificial foods. However, if you stick to a grocery list it’ll become easy to just get in and out of the store without buying foods that you won’t need, or that shouldn’t be a part of your regular diet.

          7. Try popcorn instead of chips!

Popcorn is actually part of the grain family! Therefore, an amazing substitute for empty carbs like chips. However, make sure to check the nutritional facts when purchasing your popcorn. Many microwavable popcorns have many unhealthy salts, fats, and sugars. You can try making your own popcorn for a healthier snack, and fun activity!

            8. Slow your pace when eating!

When you eat a hormone signals the brain whether or not you are full, and it can take up to 20 minutes for this hormone to actually reach your brain. When eating slow your pace so that your brain has the opportunity to signal if you are full, or if you need more. This will help prevent overeating.

              9. Try organic foods!

Organic foods are known to have higher nutritional value than other foods and are also free of harmful chemicals like pesticides and additives. Organic foods are even better for the environment than non-organic foods. However, it is important to note that organic foods typically have a shorter shelf life, and are often more expensive, so keep that in mind when buying organic.

                  10. Buy Healthy Snacks!

Instead of buying snacks that are filled with empty carbs, try to find healthier snacks at your local grocery store, and leave them around your house. Leaving them out will make them the more accessible option, therefore, the easiest choice. We took the liberty of looking for a healthy snack for you, so here are some ideas: Triscuits and cottage cheese, Skinny Pop Popcorn, cheese crisps, hummus, sweet potato chips, and Halo Top ice cream. These are all great substitutes for artificial and empty snacks.
